The skyline of Birmingham is undergoing a dramatic transformation with The Octagon, a 49-story residential tower, set to redefine urban living in the city. At 155 meters tall, this innovative eight-sided building will feature 370 rental apartments and promises sensational views across Birmingham. Although still under construction, The Octagon already dominates the city’s horizon, offering a glimpse of its future as Birmingham’s tallest building. Next on birmingham-future.
Old Joe — A Historical Landmark

Before diving into Birmingham’s modern skyscrapers, it’s worth reflecting on its earlier landmarks. One of the city’s most iconic and recognizable structures is the Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower, affectionately known as “Old Joe”. Standing at 100 meters, it has long been a symbol of Birmingham’s industrial and academic heritage.
Old Joe, part of the University of Birmingham, is the world’s tallest freestanding clock tower. Rumored to have inspired J.R.R. Tolkien’s depiction of the Orthanc Tower in The Lord of the Rings, the clock tower holds a special place in Birmingham’s cultural history. Despite being closed to the public for decades, its striking design, coupled with its ability to change facade colors for special occasions, ensures its lasting impact.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the tower played a practical role during World War II as part of radar experiments conducted at the university. Today, it remains a beloved part of the university’s Edgbaston campus and a favorite backdrop for student selfies, though it is relatively unknown to many residents outside academic circles.
10 Holloway Circus — A Facade with Stripes

Another notable skyscraper is 10 Holloway Circus, also known as Beetham Tower. At 122 meters, this 39-story mixed-use building is Birmingham’s second-tallest structure and features a striking glass facade adorned with “tiger stripes.” This unique architectural feature enhances its verticality, while colored lights illuminate the tower at night, adding vibrancy to the city’s skyline.
Designed by architect Ian Simpson and completed in 2006, 10 Holloway Circus houses the Radisson Blu Hotel on its lower 19 floors, while the upper 20 floors consist of 158 residential apartments with panoramic city views. Despite early plans for a 192-meter height, the tower’s design was revised following height restrictions introduced after the 9/11 attacks.

The tower’s structural support includes concrete columns and a central core, with post-tensioned flat concrete slabs on the upper floors. This design earned it a spot in the Emporis Skyscraper Awards in 2006, further cementing its architectural significance in Birmingham.
The Octagon — A New Icon

The Octagon, Birmingham’s newest skyscraper, stands out not just for its height but also for its innovative octagonal design. Slated for completion in 2024, this 508-foot tower will feature spacious apartments with panoramic windows, offering unparalleled views of the city.
Located in the Paradise Estate, The Octagon is part of a £1.2 billion redevelopment project. Designed by Howells Architects and constructed by Midgard, the building is supported by global real estate investor City Developments. Its eco-friendly construction and state-of-the-art facilities promise a blend of sustainability and luxury.
While not yet a historical landmark, The Octagon has the potential to become a defining feature of Birmingham’s skyline for years to come, offering one of the finest residential experiences in the UK.
