The skyline of Birmingham is undergoing a dramatic transformation with The Octagon, a 49-story residential tower, set to redefine urban living in the city. Before diving into Birmingham\u2019s modern skyscrapers, it\u2019s worth reflecting on its earlier landmarks. One of the city\u2019s most iconic and recognizable structures is the Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower, affectionately known as “Old Joe”. Standing at 100 meters, it has long been a symbol of Birmingham\u2019s industrial and academic heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old Joe, part of the University of Birmingham, is the world\u2019s tallest freestanding clock tower. Rumored to have inspired J.R.R. Tolkien\u2019s depiction of the Orthanc Tower in The Lord of the Rings<\/em>, the clock tower holds a special place in Birmingham\u2019s cultural history. 10 Holloway Circus \u2014 A Facade with Stripes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another notable skyscraper is 10 Holloway Circus, also known as Beetham Tower. At 122 meters, this 39-story mixed-use building is Birmingham\u2019s second-tallest structure and features a striking glass facade adorned with “tiger stripes.” This unique architectural feature enhances its verticality, while colored lights illuminate the tower at night, adding vibrancy to the city\u2019s skyline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designed by architect Ian Simpson and completed in 2006, 10 Holloway Circus houses the Radisson Blu Hotel on its lower 19 floors, while the upper 20 floors consist of 158 residential apartments with panoramic city views. Despite early plans for a 192-meter height, the tower’s design was revised following height restrictions introduced after the 9\/11 attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located in the Paradise Estate, The Octagon is part of a \u00a31.2 billion redevelopment project. Designed by Howells Architects and constructed by Midgard, the building is supported by global real estate investor City Developments.
